"In this version, the Oratorio Society of New York kept the French but went back to a contralto, wise, given the availability of Ewa Podles to sing the part.
True contraltos are hard to find these days, but Ms Podleś has enough energy for three of them. Here she went after Orphée’s music with fierce, fearless, almost warlike zeal. The voice sits on powerful physical underpinnings and at its best spots glows like mahagonny. The thrusts at difficult coloratura were like bayonet charges. Indeed, Ms.Podles does not seduce; she knocks one down. It’s hard not to be a fan."
